What Does it Mean to Seek First the Kingdom of God and His and Righteousness?

Text: Matthew 6:33

This is one of the very popular verses in the bible, taken from one of the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Some of us can recite it when asked, even in our sleep.

We even sing it as a song but often times we don’t ponder over those words to know what and how we can seek God’s kingdom and righteousness. Rather, we have decided to do the reverse by seeking the things that God said He would add to our lives as we seek His kingdom and righteousness.

We longer seek God’s kingdom or His righteousness. No wonder, there is so much weakness in the body of Christ.

Now, the BIG question, “what does it mean to seek fitst the kingdom of God and righteousness”?

It simply means seeking to become like Christ in character obedience and faith.

Our Lord Jesus taught His disciples a pattern for prayer “…thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”

This is what God wants, that His will be done in our lives. But how can that be, if we keep running from one place to the other seeking help when in reality, our lives should be manifesting Christ?

Our Lord Jesus, while praying for believers in John 17:3 said ..eternal life is to know you and your son whom you sent”.

If eternal life means knowing Jesus, we need to spend time with Him in His word. You will agree with me that you can not know someone you don’t spend time with.
God’s ultimate desire is to transform us to the image of Christ. Romans 8:29. “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

Brethren, Jesus is our elder brother, so we are to be like Him by following His foot steps.

What I’m saying is that some of us no longer want to hear God speak to us. We don’t have time for God. We don’t pray or study God’s word. We seek men of God rather than God Himself. Yet God says in Jeremiah 29:11 – 13 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all yo

We have to individually learn to follow hard after God. When we follow hard after God, we will have our needs met.

The psalmist said “My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.” Psalm 68:8.
You can see that when our hearts follow hard after Him, His right hand will hold us up.
And when He does, we can be rest assured that nothing in the universe can harm us.

Let’s take a look at another scripture by one of the psalmists – “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.” Psalm 42:1.
Seeking God personally should be our number one priority. Working for God is good but knowing Him personally is better.

We are always seeking God’s hands rather than His face. Just like the children of Israel in the days of moses, we don’t want to know His ways but His acts, we just want someone to hear from God for us. While He has given everyone of us the privilege to cone directly to Him. We, like the Israelites in moses days don’t want to pay the sacrifice of seeing His glory. We just want His acts.

So many of God’s children are running after miracles. We have become spiritual beggers, running from one church to another. From one miracle center to another. Instead of seeking God who gives the blessings, we now seek miracles.

We don’t want to hear God speak to us. We don’t have time for God. We don’t pray or study God’s word. Yet God says in Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
He loves us and want to have fellowship with us.

God’s word is the prerequisite for spiritual power. Without spending time with Him in His word and prayer. We cannot affect the lives of others around us. We have His life in us and so, we are to distribute that life to the world and without that we will remain babies

The bottom line is this, we must seek God first and His kingdom by daily coming to His presence at a particular time to seek Him and His righteousness, and we will be surprised how our lives would be transformed to what God really wants.

Prayer point: Lord, help me to seek you daily.
