Christianity – A Yoke of Freedom not Bondage

Christianity – A Yoke of Freedom, not Bondage
As a child I grow up in a christian home baptised as a child and having a knowledge of the fact that Jesus is the son of God. I also know that Mary and Joseph were His earthly parents. Well, it was a thing of joy and I enjoyed participating in the children department of my mother church in Ogoloma where I grew up. I participated in dramas and playlets, reciting memory verses given in Sunday lessons and special recitations during Sunday school revival week.

These experiences helped shape my life as a child though, I didn’t really have a personal encounter with the master. I just thought that was all I needed to go to heaven.

However, growing up as a teenager, I saw some of our childhood friends give their lives to Christ. They spoke in tongues when we had revival programs outside our local church. Sometimes at other districts and archdeaconry, (I grow up in an Anglican church) I, with others who were not born again always looked at those people wondered how they speak in strange tongues.

The First Step to Total Freedom

Though I knew deep inside me I needed a change. I knew I was not going to heaven if I died or if Christ should return. Today, I feel so grateful that He saved me from eternal damnation. I consciously invited him into my life in 1998 in Foundation Faith church in Bonny and got baptised by immersion. So for everyone who need total freedom. The first step to total freedom is to consciously accept Christ as Lord and saviour. Followed by water baptism.

Working For God is not Freedom

I never knew Christianity is a yoke of freedom and not bondage.

I have been born again for several years. But I didn’t have a clear understanding of what this new life, in Christ truly offers me. I had thought that as a christian, all I needed was pray, preach, work and serve in my local church.

I thought I was okay as a christian that speak in tongues. But there is still this emptiness I felt inside because I see myself, struggling with some things in my life.

Sometimes I would have victorious dreams and sometimes evil dreams. I have prayed, fasted and done everything I know to do but these problems continued.
I wondered why I wasn’t experiencing the power of Christ in my life as the early apostles. “Well”, I thought, they were privileged”.

Revelational Knowledge Guaranties Freedom

Though I prayed and fasted regularly, I just know that something is not right. I have read about the teaching of our Lord on “..carry his cross and follow me”. I thought ” how do I carry my cross?” Since a cross is heavy, I had thought that carrying my cross was something very difficult. I never new Christianity means freedom – total freedom from all firms of entanglement.

But it dawned on me when in search of total freedom, I read a book by Watchman Nee “Secrets to Spiritual Power” that carrying my cross is not as difficult as I saw it. I also read a book by Bro. Gbile Akani titled “Becoming Like Jesus”. These books completely changed my understanding of the cross. I came to understand that many of us Christians carry unnecessary burdens on ourselves. When the Lord Jesus has given us a call to freedom and liberty.

I also realised that I had died, now it is Christ that lives in me. Now, the dead don’t worry about what to eat, drink or wear. So we don’t need to worry about anything. All we need is to dwell daily in God’s presence by spending time learning of Him through the word and prayer. This will enable us hear Him speak to us daily.

Matthew 11: 28 – 30 is what every christian needs to live the life of freedom that our Lord Jesus bought for us with His blood. Many Christians are under the yoke of bondage where they are made to believe that they must fast and pray for blessings and or sow seeds before they can be blessed. Though fasting and giving for the work of God play a vital role in the life of very believer, if we fail to acknowledge what Christ has done for us and act accordingly, we will remain spiritual beggars, see Philemon verse 6.

The truth is everyone in Christ is already blessed. But people pay as much as N20,000 and above to buy an “anointed” handkerchief”, some buy “anointed” oil for as high as N50,000. Some even pay “men of God” to pray and fast for them while they pay them in return.

Come on! Let’s face reality, how on earth will someone pay that much when the bible says freely you have received freely give. Why can’t you go to your father and talk to Him directly?

Christianity is Freedom

We have s much problem today, because of our failure to learn of God.
I came in contact with a video where the “woman of God” was always asking members to sow seeds of $1000 dollars if not they can never be blessed.
Brethren, Christianity is free, Christ Jesus paid for everything, including your health, finances and everything you need for life. But the problem is many Christians are not ready to take the pains to learn of Christ.

Now, let’s look at the scripture in Matthew 11:28-30 let’s see how it actually relates to our topic “Christianity – A yoke of Freedom not of Bondage”.

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

I will not say much about verse 28. I guess we are all very familiar with it. But let’s look at verse 29, he said we should learn of Him. But many of us Christians don’t have the time to learn of Him. How can we know Him if we don’t sit at His feet to learn of Him? We prefer to go looking for pastors to pray for us (I’m not saying it is wrong for your pastor to pray for you, what I mean is stop running after men and women of God. A real man of God will not tell you to pay him to pray for you. He will rather tell you to pray while he will also pray along with you, even when he prays for you, he will not ask anything in return, it is left for you to decide to appreciate what God has used him to do he for you), and they put a heavy yoke on us and we think that is what Christianity teaches. No! Christianity is freedom not bondage. He said His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He is meek and lowly at heart.

Come on brothers and sisters don’t take upon yourself what God has removed from you. He says He has delivered us from the law of sin and death. We now have the law of the spirit of life in Christ at work in us. Not of bondage to fear and run around for help while the help you need is inside you. “Christ in you, the hope of glory”.
He has delivered us from the kingdom of darkness to the marvellous kingdom of His dear son. So no more running around to put yourself in more bondage when in reality you are already free from bondage.
His yoke is easy and His burden is light. In Christ we have freedom where by we cry “Abba father”.

Finally, if you are looking for freedom from any form of bondage, look no further, Jesus has done it all. What you need now is learn of Him through His word. Seek Him daily by spending the early hours of your day at His feet. It can be late night or very early but spend time with Him and learn of Him daily and you will never be wrong because He will guide you to where you should be.
Welcome to the life of liberty in Christ.

Thanks for reading through. Please share to help other believers come out of the yoke bondage into the yoke of freedom in Christ Jesus our Lord.
