How to Produce Palm oil in Nigeria
Palm oil is one commodity that is very essential for every Nigerian. As Africans and Nigerians we use palm oil daily for the food we consume. This implies that about 95% of Nigerians need palm oil daily, which brings us to the importance of palm oil in the home. However, there are millions of people that don’t have an idea on how to produce palm in Nigeria.
Recently, because of the economic recession most of the food stuffs have become very expensive for an average Nigerian but at the same, it is important to note that it is also an opportunity for business minded people to make extra money.
In this article, I will be giving you step by step guide on how to produce palm oil in Nigeria. So sit tight, grab a cup of tea and follow the steps I will be bringing to you.
Anyone can produce palm oil for domestic use but in this article I will focus on how to produce palm oil in large quantity with or without the help of a machine.
So let’s take them one step at a time.
- Get the Bunches of Palm Fruits from the Field
You can buy bunches of palm fruits from a farmer or you harvest your palm fruits if you have plantation of palm fruits. I know that several people in Nigeria have palm oil plantation. Especially those in the east. But to produce for commercial purpose you need to contact people farm for commercial purpose of if you have enough capital, you can have your own plantation for your palm oil business.
After buying or harvesting the palm fruits, you remove them from the bunches.
- Wash the Palm Fruits Thoroughly and Bring to Boil
The second step is to wash the palm fruits and boil until they are done. This can take up to 1 hour or more depending on the quantity of the fruits. Make sure that the fruits become very soft to enable the oil to be extracted properly.
- Mash the cooked palm fruit thoroughly but don’t crack the nuts. This will make the oil to be extracted without difficulty.
4. Add hot water to the mashed palm fruit and separate the juice from the nut and chaff.
5. Cook the juice until the oil being lighter than water separates and rises to the top.
6. Extract the palm oil from the water and boil it again until there is no more water in it.
Your oil is ready to use, you can store in bottles or cans for home or commercial purposes.
